While searching example code for an Flash online Guitar Tuner I came upon the very efficient Java 5Ktuner on Psychic Origami. Luckily Java to Flash conversion proved proved, once again, easy. The Flash AS3 version works great – thanks to the low overhead of the autocorrelation function used for measuring pitch.

Quoted from Psychic Origami: “The app is more or less non-interactive. It simply starts up tries to work out what note is being played. It shows a simple slider that moves according to what note is being played and indicates how close to that note you are. In addition the raw frequency (in hz) is shown, as well a chart that shows the autocorrelation function of the input sound. A red line is drawn on this chart when a “valid” note is heard and indicates the wavelength of the overall frequency.”

Overlooking the legs & webbed toes, it’s even anatomically correct.

I have always been intrigued by the (im)possibility of evincing minds. It is kind of magical to try and capture a stream of consciousness, some part of an emotion or maybe a fleeting thought – be it in paint or graph, in word or number.

So it was nice to chance upon a classic psychologists tool in a garage sale selling an original 1955 first edition of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). A fine specimen of, probably, the most famous psychological test ever!

Kwizt is ready! Kwizt is an online interactive battle-quiz for schools. Kwizt helps students test their knowledge and enables them to challenge classmates. It allows teachers to create battles and embed photos or YouTube movies with each question.

For its backend the application makes use of Drupal, extensively building on the AMFPHP, Quiz and Services modules. The userinterface is 100% Flash Actionscript 3.0, smoothly bouncing elements up and down the stage thanks to GreenSocks libraries. Design by Things To Make And Do (Rogier Rosema) and Jack Broeders.

I’ll probably post on some of the many things I’ve learned later, but in the meanwhile you could take a provisional look at kwizt.dev.mnds.org – user: aaa – pass: aaa (Flash 10 & higher)

Two more things:

- the demo version is reset to its default values every two hours
- demo questions are, for now, in Dutch.
